This project was one of the most challenging of our career so far, both in the actual physical construction of the structure as well as in the obstacles that the building site location created. Challenging but extremely rewarding for everyone that was involved in the creation of this wonderful beach house.
The architectural firm that the homeowners worked with throughout the design and construction of their beach house was Bernbaum Architects Ltd. in Calgary. The architect, Harvey Bernbaum, was absolutely great to work with – he was definite in his designs and ideas of course but was always willing to discuss the options that were put forward by ourselves or our trades.
The house fits in the natural landscape so well that you would think that it has always been there – the material choices & colours help it to blend so seamlessly into the surrounding environment.
Our photographers managed to capture the magic feeling on this piece of paradise in Qualicum Beach!
This shot was taken a short while later from almost the same spot and while still magical, produced quite a different look.
While this photo is on the dark side, it does show you the massive river rock fireplace exterior wall & chimney and the inviting entrance way. Native plants in the landscape were planted with abundance, along with many drought tolerant grasses and woodland type species.
Just to give a small taste of the rich interior spaces, I have included this photo of the kitchen and the following one that encompasses the kitchen and great room together. The blending of inside to outside is as seamless as is the log structure to the forest. The walls of glass with french doors lead you out to cedar decks where you find yourself in awe at the splendour of the beach, distant islands and coastal mountains beyond.
