In our estimation, any trip out to the West Coast of Vancouver Island would not be complete without a visit to the Wickaninnish Inn on Chesterman Beach just outside of Tofino. The setting is breathtakingly stunning, it is nestled into a rich forest on the edge of the turbulent Pacific Ocean with views that have you immediately mesmerized.
There is so much that can be revealed about the Wickaninnish Inn ~ the architecture, the interior design and decoration, the landscape, the knowledgeable & courteous staff, the wine selection and the meals – the dinner we enjoyed with our friends was outstanding, every morsel was so beautifully presented and so incredibly delicious. These are all subjects for another post…..as much as I’d love to continue on with these memorable topics!
One thing that stood out in our eyes and so impressed us was the use of adzed timbers, both inside the buildings and out. Before I go any further let me show you an example,
The adzing technique lends an aged authenticity to the timbers, adding textured character while creating a softened and refined appearance.
We understand that the adzing of the timbers throughout the Wickaninnish Inn was produced by one man. He worked on the massive pieces of wood both in a tent near the construction site and in a location nearby on the beach. Can you just imagine working on your craft in such an amazing way? On the beach, with just the sounds of the wind, the waves and the birds! Lovely.
Inside the Inn the use of the adzed timbers is exceptional,
The adzed timber work is but a sample of the attention to detail that has been so thoughtfully executed at the Wickininnish Inn. In every aspect, time at this destination resort on the wild west coast leaves you feeling inspired, pampered and relaxed. Even before you leave ~ you can’t wait to return!
I was happy to hear that you got away to the West Coast, Linda. I look forward to hearing about your trip when I get back. Everyone should experience the rugged beauty of that area at least once in their lives. We hope to make another trip to Tofino sometime after we get home.
I thought of you as we were there, I know you much you two love Long Beach and Tofino!
