Purple wicker…..

These purple wicker chairs add such an upbeat vibe to this calm looking covered patio, such an original choice of colour for wicker! It has been combined perfectly with the eggplant colour used on the french doors and surrounding trims ~ and the blue in the pots and cushions compliments the look so nicely.

The carpets just couldn’t be better for this area and the small hit of yellow in the lemons on the tree is the finishing touch. I adore this covered patio and would just love to be able to implement this colour scheme on one of our projects!

Pink Orchid…..

Friends of ours stopped in for a visit one day and brought us this incredibly lovely Orchid stem ….. I had never seen one stem this full of blooms!

The deep pink and burgundy looked amazing against the snowy backdrop outside….

and as I moved the orchid and the camera ever so slightly, the colours seemed to change….

Such outstanding design talent Mother Nature has!

Epsom Salt Candles…..

I came across this pretty table arrangement a couple of times in my travels around the blogosphere ~ it seems to cover several things for this time of year ~ it is gives a calm, quiet & peaceful look after the busyness of December, with a colourful & cheerful palette to provide the promise of spring ahead, all while still acknowledging that it is winter.

For me, it also gave an idea for a small project to stimulate my creativity. The instructions for the candles are so simple, it may even be a good project to do with your children or grandchildren.

To make ~ pour epsom salts onto a flat surface, add glitter if you like a more sparkly look. Apply a layer of decoupage adhesive to the candle sides using a paint bush or foam one, keeping the glue away from the top edges so the flame doesn’t get near the salts & glitter. While wet, lie the candle in the mix, lift and rotate until all of the candle is covered. When it is dry, set on a tray that has more of the mix covering it or on a clean surface.

Coastal weather…..

What a difference a few days can make when it comes to the weather here on Vancouver Island and coastal British Columbia….late last week we had a lovely fresh snowfall that was deep enough to close our schools and have everyone staying home, leaving the roads so quiet. Many people in our neighbourhood were out walking though, enjoying the challenge, along with the invigorating excercise.  There were also people like me, out with their cameras capturing the beauty…..

It was windy and very cold so the snow was swirling off the roofs creating drifts of fluffy, delicate powder.

The day after the initial snow, the sun came out and really had the snow putting on a show for us ~ it glistened and sparkled like diamond dust had been sprinkled all over it ~ with the temperatures below freezing it was a show mostly watched from inside a heated home though. Anything that reads  minus zero keeps us huddled inside for the most part, except for our newcomers from the other parts of Canada who probably laugh at us winter softies.

Three days of this splendour and then a crazy wind storm with pelting rain and warm air consumed the day. Not a good day for vessels on the water, the waves were huge and crashing onto the beach! Then by yesterday, we were seeing rainbows and everything had returned to green….

We talk about the weather a lot here on the coast, it is as common conversation starter amongst us ~ the weather is unchangeable, so we adapt to what ever it decides to produce, as we all must wherever we live I suppose. During the winter we dream of and plan for winter getaways to warmer, sunnier climes ~ another common conversation starter in these parts!

Red and all lined up….

This scene caught my eye the last time we were in Vancouver….

- this row of staggered benches are on Burrard St. just outside of the new Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel and right across the street from the new & incredibly gorgeous convention centre.

The visual delights to be found in Vancouver are limitless – and by walking, as we do so much when we are away, is one of the best ways to really see & take in the city and all of it’s varied details. We love our visits to the city …. the people, the lights, the architecture,  parks, selection of restaurants, and the shopping….coming from the small community of Qualicum Beach, we really appreciate the multitude of options available to us there. A whole new world!
